Warren County Conservation District staff are available to walk you through the steps of writing your own Manure Management Plan (MMP). Call 814-726-1441 to make an appointment for February 11th or February 25th from 9am – 11am or 1:30pm – 3:30pm, at the Warren County Conservation District office:
4000 Conewango Ave., Warren, PA.
Staff members can perform the necessary calculations to determine if a MMP will work for you, or if you are in need of a Nutrient Management Plan (NMP). Come ready with your current animal numbers, crop rotations (if any), and how many acres you have available for spreading manure (aka "spreadable acres”). If we’re not able to help you complete the whole plan in the time allotted, we are confident you will have all of the information you need to complete the plan at home; and of course we’ll be available for questions after your appointment. MMP’s help to manage the manure produced on your property and give your crops or pastures the nutrients they need to thrive. Having a MMP, if you land-apply manure, is also required by Pennsylvania State Law.
Lisa is an experienced conservation professional who works for Stroud Water Research Center and serves as the coordinator for the Pennsylvania Soil Health Coalition to foster collaboration among numerous stakeholders involved in soil health education and research. Lisa advocates for improving soil health to achieve water quality goals, grow nutrient-dense foods, and enhance farm profitability.
Lisa expounded on the topic of soil microbiology. She emphasized how soil is not just “dirt” because soil is living, breathing, and alive, with tons of microorganisms connecting to a larger, “underground” ecosystem. By understanding the ecosystem, what nutrients your soil needs, and how Carbon plays a role in healthy soil, you are then able to “feed” the soil and build structure, opting for better crop yields and soil stability.
David spent 25 years with Agway and Cargill as a dairy nutrition specialist and has provided regional support to dealers and customers of Kings AgriSeeds Inc since April 2010. David & his wife, Tina, take a pragmatic approach to agriculture and have changed and evolved their enterprise over the years, all the while high quality forages have been a constant.
To expand upon Lisa Blazure’s topic, David took the parts of soil microbiology and explained how cover crops interact with that biology. Cover crops are not only good for forages but also soil coverage, and some cover crops even integrate nutrients back into the soil for further crop production and health. There are numerous cover crops for any operation type to partner with operational, management, and herd goals.
"Lisa and Dave were excellent - really brought something new and relevant."
"The meeting space is very nice! The multiple TVs were helpful to see the material from anywhere in the room."
"Lisa's presentation was wonderful! Thank you for organizing this!"
